Packing Tips for the Everyday Traveler

packing for vacation

If you’re anything like us, once you plan any type of getaway, it’s all you can think about. The mere thought of taking a break from your everyday routine and saying goodbye to reality for even a few days sounds like heaven at any given time of day and all you want is to be there instantly. Unfortunately however, there’s one major component to traveling that must be taken care of before you can go anywhere: packing.

It’s probably safe to say that no one truly enjoys the task of packing. You’ve got to take the time to think about what you may or may not need based on your plans and you’re always feeling like you’re forgetting something. So when it comes to partaking in everyone’s absolute least favorite activity, consider a few of these great tips to make the process as pain-free as possible:

Roll Instead of Folding

Travel experts swear by this packing technique. Not only will you be able to get more clothing into one small space when they’re rolled, but you’ll also avoid the deep wrinkles that go along with folding.

Make a List

This may seem a little too OCD to some, but trust us when we tell you it’s worth it. Even if you hold off on packing until a couple of nights before you leave, when you create a packing list weeks in advance, you know exactly what you need, making the process fly by faster.

Never Check the Essentials

Airlines manage to lose luggage all the time, which means that you have to prepare yourself if that’s how you’re choosing to travel. Any important medications that you or your child need, IDs, money, credit cards or any invaluable jewelry that you would hate to lose should be with you at all times. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Know the Baggage-Fee Policy

A number of airlines will allow passengers to check one bag for free, but that’s not the case with all of them. Make sure all of your bases are covered and check out the policy. Additionally, most that do allow for one free checked bag will put a weight limit on that offer. Be mindful of what that may be and be sure to weigh your luggage before heading to the airport.

Of course, these are only a few tips to get you through the task of packing with a few headaches as possible. To check out the full list, check out USA Today’s article and let us know if you have anything to add in the comments section below!
